The first function of a boat is to stay afloat; therefore, it is the number one concern for any mariner contemplating a sea voyage to ensure a boat will float regardless of what the unknown will throw at it.  Is the mast and rigging strong enough? Does the boat float if healed over on a side? Is the boat self-righting?  What happens with a boat if it is fully submerged in water?
